Chapter Twenty

“Can I help you?” Ricky removed his earbuds and eyed me suspiciously. I couldn’t blame him. This was probably the first conversation anyone in this room had ever initiated with Ricky. On purpose, at least. But these were desperate times that called for desperate measures.

“I, um…I have a question that I’m hoping you can help me with,” I said, jittery from the extra coffee I downed this morning in an effort to offset a night of relentless insomnia. Or maybe my body was already experiencing the symptoms of intense withdrawal from Forest’s emails, being that it was eleven in the morning and I had yet to come across a single one.

“A question?” Ricky popped up from his seat like an actor who’d just heard his name called at the Academy Awards. “I’m always telling people to come to me with questions, but they seem to think they know it all. But there’s really no room for error on this project, you know? I mean, look what happened yesterday with the whole…” He raised his eyebrows and gestured with his thumb to the interrogation room before lowering his voice to a whisper. “We can’t afford to have another mistake after that one.” His eyes darted around the room, as if there was a possibility of one of our temps being a plant from the higher-ups, before adding in a low voice, “Not that we were the ones responsible for it.”

I nodded, pleased Ricky had brought the subject up himself. This was going to be easier than I thought. “Did they tell you anything more? I mean, about what happened?”

He shook his head. “Nothing other than an email early this morning giving the green light to instruct everyone to start reviewing documents again.” His forehead wrinkled. “But I’m sure they’ll fill me in on the details soon.” He nodded earnestly as if agreeing with himself.

“Did they tell you the name of the lawyer who had his personal emails caught up in the data set?” I lowered my voice, despite the earbuds jammed in my fellow temps’ ears. “In case I come across any today I want to be able to…um…report it.”

Ricky eyed me for a beat longer than necessary. “No, but if you come across anything that doesn’t look like it should be part of our review you should always report it to me immediately.”

“Of course.” I nodded, matching his earnest tone.

“I’ve asked a few temps if they came across any emails that obviously shouldn’t have been in our data set, but nobody will admit to anything.” He glared over his shoulder before crossing his arms and puffing out his scrawny chest. “Keep your ear to the ground, and let me know if you hear of anything.”

“I will.” I cleared my throat to mask the tiny shake. “But chances are whoever reviewed them wouldn’t have even noticed they didn’t belong. I mean, we review a lot of personal stuff, right?”

Ricky let out a short, mirthless laugh. “There’s a difference between personal stuff and reviewing someone’s entire inbox.
